Forging ahead: living fully at every age
Recently, we spoke with a 76-year-old woman interested in joining one of our retreats. She admitted a concern: “What if it’s full of older people trying to better their approach to life instead of forging ahead with life?” That contrast struck me, and I wanted to understand why she felt the two were in opposition.

After a bit of reading and reflection, it seems to me that too often, we think of aging as something to be endured—a waiting game where the years pass and we quietly step aside. But positive aging isn’t about waiting. It’s about “forging ahead”, embracing the time we have now, and continuing to grow, explore, and create i.e “bettering our approach to life”
Forging ahead or bettering our approach to life means asking: What’s next for me? rather than What’s left for me? It’s about discovering passions we’ve never tried, dusting off dreams we once set aside, or simply choosing to live with more purpose and joy each day.
It doesn’t have to be grand. Forging ahead can be as small as picking up a new book, joining a walking group, planting a garden, or learning a skill that excites you. Each step forward keeps us vibrant and reminds us that the journey of becoming doesn’t stop with age.
Aging positively is less about counting the years and more about making the years count. So instead of waiting for time to pass, let’s keep forging ahead—with curiosity, positivity, and the confidence that there are still good chapters to be written, one step at a time.
