Seating at your grand mother kitchen table

After several short trips to Portugal, I can confidently say that no matter where you go, you will always find a café or restaurant with grandmothers in the kitchen preparing simple, delicious dishes. And the prices are incredibly affordable!

My best experience was at a roadside stop near Tomar. I had no desire to eat a soggy sandwich at a service station, so I decided to exit the highway at Tomar. Right after the exit, there was an unassuming roadside restaurant. We pushed open the door to find a room packed with locals. We found a table and were offered two daily specials: calamari with rice or chicken with salad and potatoes. Everything was tasty and hearty, reminiscent of unpretentious, homemade cooking. We paid just €25 for the two of us, which included the daily specials, a bottle of water, two desserts, and a cover charge (bread, olives, cheese). Incredible!

So, when you travel through Portugal, don’t hesitate to dine at these little cafés and restaurants. You should feel right at home. Bon appétit!
